Just DO IT

Chris Jackson and Ed Laborio were searching for help with their diabetes, and found hope in Joslin's DO IT Program.

You wouldn’t necessarily say Chris Jackson and Ed Laborio have much in common. Jackson is a 71-year-old retired educator, married with two daughters, lives in the suburbs and plays golf. Laborio is a 27-year-old stockbroker, single, lives in the city and coaches Little League. Even their diabetes might not appear to be a common denominator considering Laborio has type 1 diabetes and Jackson has type 2 diabetes. But after spending three full days together, along with eight others with diabetes, they now share a common bond as Diabetes Outpatient Intensive Treatment program alumni.

The three-and-a-half day program at Joslin Clinic is affectionately known as DO IT, a “tune-up” for personal diabetes management. This clinically proven program includes a physical assessment, daily physician visits and small group and individual sessions with the DO IT team, which includes an endocrinologist, registered dietitian, nurse educator, exercise physiologist and social worker. Combining state-of-the-art medical care and diabetes education, plus individualized nutrition and physical activity prescriptions, the DO IT team provides patients with the tools they need to “enjoy better health and experience far fewer medical complications, which significantly increases their quality of life,” says Cathy Carver, M.S., A.N.P., C.D.E., Director of Education and New Clinic Program Development. “We have data that prove DO IT makes a difference.”
