Joslin Knowledge at the Fingertips of Many

Joslin’s Strategic Initiatives Division, launched in 1998, focuses on improving the quality of diabetes care around the globe through education. The Joslin clinicians, researchers and administrators who make up this division create innovative programs that put Joslin knowledge at the fingertips of clinicians and patients everywhere.

Joslin’s Professional Education programs reach more than 35,000 primary care physicians and other professionals annually. Through this audience, Joslin has achieved national visibility and a reputation for excellence in producing programs that maximize educational impact. These programs empower healthcare providers to more effectively set the standards of diabetes care for their communities, provide optimal management of all diabetes patients, improve healthcare outcomes and enhance patient quality of life.

The Joslin Vision NetworkTM (JVN) delivers Joslin-quality diagnostic eye and health services in the U.S.  JVN addresses a significant patient need: detection and management of diabetic retinopathy and other ocular disorders. With JVN, Joslin researchers developed an imaging system and service where patients receive regular retinal evaluations within a primary care physician’s, endocrinologist’s, or other medical practice without the need for pupil dilation. By reducing barriers to eye care, JVN increases the rate of ongoing disease surveillance and facilitates appropriate and timely referral of patients to eye care specialists when needed.

Joslin’s Disease Management Program offers tools to providers, health plans and employers that decrease variability in practice, reduce short and long-term complications, and increase quality of life and patient satisfaction. This program has helped improve patients’ A1C levels and reduce patient hospitalizations and lost time from work. Joslin’s Disease Management Program reaches more physicians and nurse educators all over the world than any other resource.

Joslin’s Publications offer a wide range of books, cookbooks, videotapes, online services and other educational materials for people with both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes and the physicians and allied health providers who care for them. All books are authored by Joslin Diabetes Center staff, thus providing the Joslin expertise reputation and experience.

Joslin’s Affiliated Center Program consists of more than 20 hospital-based Affiliates and satellites in the United States, which provide more than 100,000 annual patient visits. Joslin also has an international Affiliate in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Working with domestic and international hospitals and healthcare systems, these centers provide a continuum of care based on Joslin standards of practice and quality—that is, expert diabetes management education that can prevent complications.
