Nutritional Intervention to Prevent Diabetes (NIP) Study

Researchers are doing a study, using dietary supplements, DHA, to see if given during pregnancy and/or early childhood could help in delaying or preventing type 1 diabetes in individuals who may have a higher risk of developing type 1 diabetes. DHA is a natural ingredient found in a mother's breast milk and in various foods. This study will gather information to find out if a larger study should be done to see if DHA can prevent type 1 diabetes and how to do a larger study.

Pregnant mothers in their 3rd trimester (more than 24 weeks), and babies up to five months old may be eligible if the baby has a relative (mother, father, sibling or half-sibling) with type 1 diabetes. Study involves up to 11 visits to the Joslin Diabetes Center over a 3-year period. Compensation is available for each study visit completed.
